Error message · Shopify (the WooCommerce version is "No products were found matching your selection")

“This collection is empty”

Shopify shows this on a collection page that has no products to display. On a brand-new store it's expected. On a live store it means visitors are reaching a shelf with nothing on it: the products exist but aren't in this collection, aren't available on the Online Store sales channel, are sold out and hidden, or the collection's automatic conditions no longer match anything. A collection linked from your menu that's empty costs sales and looks like a store that's shutting down.

Is your site showing it right now?

The free scan loads your page like a visitor and checks for this message, plus broken links, script errors and phone layout. It also walks your signup, booking or contact form, without sending anything.

Why it happens

  • An automated collection whose conditions (tag, vendor, price, type) no longer match any product, often after tags were renamed or an app rewrote them
  • Products not published to the Online Store sales channel (available on POS or a wholesale channel only), or scheduled to publish later
  • Products set to Draft or Archived, or deleted by a sync app
  • Every product in the collection is sold out and the theme hides sold-out products
  • The menu links to an old collection handle after the collection was renamed or recreated, so visitors land on a collection that's empty while the real one lives at a new address

How to fix it

  1. Open the collection in the admin

Shopify admin > Products > Collections > the collection. If it's automated, read its conditions and check the product count. If it's manual, check the product list. An empty count here is the cause; a non-zero count means a channel or availability issue.

  2. Fix the conditions or add the products

For automated collections, compare the condition's tag or vendor spelling with the products' actual tags (one renamed tag empties a collection). For manual collections, add the products back. Save and reload the storefront.

  3. Check sales channels and status

Open a product that should be there. Under Sales channels, make sure Online Store is on and not scheduled; under Status, make sure it's Active, not Draft or Archived. Bulk edit fixes many at once.

  4. Check stock and the theme's sold-out setting

If everything in the collection is sold out, either restock, allow purchase when out of stock, or turn off the theme's hide-sold-out option so the products still show with a "Sold out" badge.

  5. Check the menu link

Online Store > Navigation: make sure each menu item points at the current collection, not an old handle. Then search the live store for the empty collection URL and fix every link to it. The free scan above finds empty collection pages your menu links to.

Questions

The products show in the admin's collection but not on the store.

Then it's availability: the Online Store channel is off for them, they're scheduled, or they're Draft. Fix the products, not the collection.

An app emptied my collection.

Tagging and inventory apps rewrite tags and statuses. Check the app's logs or recent changes, correct the tags, and set the app to leave those fields alone or remove it.

Can I change the message?

Yes, in the theme's language settings (Edit default theme content). But a nicer message on an empty shelf still sells nothing; fix the collection or remove its link.

Can Page Canary tell me if this comes back?

Yes. Page Canary checks your key pages every day for this message and others like it, confirms it on a second check, and emails you with the fix. One site is free.
