“This service has been suspended by its owner.”
Render has stopped the web service that serves the site and shows its suspension notice on the domain. A service is suspended when someone suspends it in the dashboard, when a payment fails, or when a free instance's usage runs out. The code, environment and database are kept; nothing is deleted by a suspension.
Is your site showing it right now?
The free scan loads your page like a visitor and checks for this message, plus broken links, script errors and phone layout. It also walks your signup, booking or contact form, without sending anything.
Free, no signup. Usually done in about a minute. Why it happens
- A payment failed or the card on file expired, and Render suspended the workspace's paid services
- Someone chose Suspend on the service (to pause costs during a redesign, for example) and didn't resume it
- A free instance used up its monthly hours or pipeline minutes
- The site moved to another host, but the domain still points at the suspended Render service
How to fix it
Open the service in the Render dashboard
The service page shows a banner saying why it's suspended and a Resume button. If it's a billing hold, the banner links to the payment page.
Fix billing, then resume
Under Billing, update the card and settle any failed invoice. Resume the service afterwards; it redeploys from the last successful build.
Check the plan
A free instance that ran out of hours resumes next month, or straight away on a paid instance type (change it under Settings, Instance Type).
Point the domain elsewhere if you moved
If the site now lives on another host, update the domain's DNS to that host and remove the custom domain from the Render service so the suspension page stops showing.
Questions
Is the database affected?
A suspended web service doesn't touch a Render Postgres database, but databases can be suspended separately for the same billing reasons. Check each resource in the dashboard.
Will resuming lose my environment variables?
No. Settings, environment variables and the last build are kept. Resume redeploys them as they were.
Can Page Canary tell me if this comes back?
Yes. Page Canary checks your key pages every day for this message and others like it, confirms it on a second check, and emails you with the fix. One site is free.
