“There isn't a GitHub Pages site here.”
The domain points at GitHub Pages, but no repository has a Pages site published for it. GitHub shows this 404 instead. It also matters for safety: while a domain points at GitHub with no site claiming it, someone else could set up a site on it.
Is your site showing it right now?
The free scan loads your page like a visitor and checks for this message, plus broken links, script errors and phone layout. It also walks your signup, booking or contact form, without sending anything.
Free, no signup. Usually done in about a minute. Why it happens
- GitHub Pages is turned off for the repository, or the publishing branch or folder changed
- The custom domain was removed from the repository's Pages settings (or the CNAME file was deleted)
- The repository was deleted, renamed or made private
- The last Pages build or deployment failed
How to fix it
Check the repository's Pages settings
In the repository, open Settings, Pages. Pick the branch and folder (or GitHub Actions) to publish from, and put your domain in the Custom domain box.
Check the build
On the Actions tab, the latest "pages build and deployment" run should be green. If it failed, open it, fix the error and run it again.
Check the DNS
For a root domain, use A records for 185.199.108.153, 185.199.109.153, 185.199.110.153 and 185.199.111.153; for a subdomain, a CNAME to your-user.github.io.
Not using it any more? Remove the DNS records
If the site moved elsewhere, delete the records pointing at GitHub so nobody else can publish a site on your domain.
Questions
Why does my username.github.io address work?
Pages is on, but the custom domain isn't set in the repository's Pages settings. Add it there.
How long do changes take?
A Pages deployment usually takes a minute or two; DNS changes can take up to a day to reach everyone.
Can Page Canary tell me if this comes back?
Yes. Page Canary checks your key pages every day for this message and others like it, confirms it on a second check, and emails you with the fix. One site is free.
