“Looks like you've followed a broken link or entered a URL that doesn't exist on this site.”
Netlify received the request but has no page for it. On the homepage it means the domain isn't attached to a deployed site, or the latest deploy published an empty or wrong folder. On a single page it's usually a route the site doesn't know about, common with single-page apps that have no redirect rule, or a page that was renamed.
Is your site showing it right now?
The free scan loads your page like a visitor and checks for this message, plus broken links, script errors and phone layout. It also walks your signup, booking or contact form, without sending anything.
Free, no signup. Usually done in about a minute. Why it happens
- The custom domain isn't added to the site in Netlify, or it points at a site that was deleted
- The last deploy's publish directory is wrong (for example "dist" when the build writes to "build"), so Netlify published a folder with no index.html
- A single-page app without a redirect rule, so any URL other than / is a 404 to Netlify
- A page was renamed or removed and the old URL is still linked
How to fix it
Check the domain in Netlify
Open the site, then Domain management. Your domain should be listed there with a valid DNS state. If it's missing, add it; if it's on a different site, move it.
Check the last deploy
On the Deploys tab, open the latest deploy and look at its summary. If it published zero files, or the log shows a build error, fix the build command or the publish directory under Build settings and deploy again.
Add a redirect for a single-page app
If the homepage works but every other URL doesn't, add a _redirects file with "/* /index.html 200" (or the same rule in netlify.toml) so the app handles its own routes.
Redirect pages you renamed
For a page that moved, add a redirect from the old path to the new one in _redirects so visitors and search engines don't hit the error.
Questions
The site works at its netlify.app address but not on my domain. Why?
The deploy is fine; the domain isn't connected to it. Add the domain under Domain management and check the DNS records it asks for.
Can I use my own 404 page?
Yes. Put a 404.html in the publish directory and Netlify serves it for missing pages, with your branding and a link back to the homepage.
Can Page Canary tell me if this comes back?
Yes. Page Canary checks your key pages every day for this message and others like it, confirms it on a second check, and emails you with the fix. One site is free.
