“Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”
While WordPress updates itself, a plugin or a theme, it puts a file called .maintenance in the site's main folder and shows this message to visitors. Normally the file is removed a few seconds later. If the update was interrupted, the file stays and the message stays with it.
Is your site showing it right now?
The free scan loads your page like a visitor and checks for this message, plus broken links, script errors and phone layout. It also walks your signup, booking or contact form, without sending anything.
Free, no signup. Usually done in about a minute. Why it happens
- An update stopped halfway: a timeout, a closed browser tab, or the server ran out of memory
- Many plugins updated at once, and one of them failed
How to fix it
Delete the .maintenance file
Open your host's file manager or FTP, go to the folder that holds wp-config.php, turn on "show hidden files", and delete .maintenance. The site comes back straight away.
Finish the interrupted update
Log in to wp-admin, open Dashboard, Updates, and run any update that's still pending. If a plugin now shows an error, delete and reinstall it from the Plugins page.
Update a few at a time next time
Updating plugins one or two at a time keeps each update short, so a timeout is less likely to leave the site stuck.
Questions
Is it safe to delete .maintenance?
Yes. It's a temporary marker WordPress makes during updates; it holds nothing else.
Why do I see the site but visitors don't?
Logged-in admins can sometimes still see pages while visitors get the maintenance message, so check from a private window.
Can Page Canary tell me if this comes back?
Yes. Page Canary checks your key pages every day for this message and others like it, confirms it on a second check, and emails you with the fix. One site is free.
